This is Part 5 of The Internship Edge. Part 3 made the case for adding global internships; this part answers the question that comes right after: added where? A destination map for portfolio planning and for the student trying to match a major to a place.

Ask ten study abroad offices to name the best countries for internships abroad, and most will answer with wherever their own provider happens to operate. That is not a map of the field. It is a map of one company’s footprint.

This piece does something more useful: it describes where global internships are genuinely concentrated right now, across enough industries to serve more than one kind of student. Several of these cities are ones we run programs in, and we link to those directly. Others are simply part of any accurate map of the field. Both belong here, because a student choosing a destination deserves the real picture rather than a brochure.

Quick answer

A realistic top ten spans finance and business hubs (New York, London), technology and innovation centers (Seoul, Bangalore, Berlin, Dublin), manufacturing and supply-chain economies (Ho Chi Minh City), a fast-growing service economy (Bangkok), and creative, arts, and luxury industries (Florence, Paris). No single city serves every major — an economics student, a psychology student, and an arts student should not be pointed at the same place, and this piece does not pretend otherwise.

The Ten

The first three lead on one external measure; the Global Financial Centers Index 38 (September 2025), which ranks financial-center competitiveness worldwide. After that, order reflects breadth of opportunity across disciplines rather than a strict hierarchy, because ranking a fashion capital against a manufacturing hub would be a category error.

  1. USA - New York City: Finance, Business & Media

Ranked #1 globally in GFCI 38, with 43 Fortune 500 headquarters as of 2026 and more than 200,000 Wall Street finance jobs. Beyond banking, it is a genuine center for media, publishing, and marketing.

  2. UK - London: Finance, Policy & Media

Ranked #2 in GFCI 38, closing on New York after a 12-point gain, and Western Europe’s dominant financial center. Strong secondary depth in public policy, publishing, and media.

  3. South Korea - Seoul: Innovation & Technology

The highest-ranked Asian center in GFCI 38’s top ten. Separately, South Korea’s business-enterprise R&D spending reached roughly 3.93% of GDP in 2023 (OECD), among the most research-intensive economies anywhere, concentrated in the conglomerates headquartered here.

Authentica placement: Global Innovation Internship in Seoul.

  4. India - Bangalore: Engineering & Technology

Ranked 14th globally in Startup Genome’s Global Startup Ecosystem Report 2025, up seven places in a year. The technical culture predates the software boom: state-led aerospace and research institutions have been here since the 1960s, which is why the engineering bench runs deeper than any single cycle.

  5. Germany - Berlin: Start-Ups & Innovation

More than 1,600 venture-backed startups and €169 billion in combined ecosystem value — 43% of Germany’s entire startup value in one city (Berlin Senate, 2025). An internship here means early-stage reality: undefined roles, whatever the week needs.

Authentica placement: Innovation & Start-up Internship in Berlin.

  6. Thailand - Bangkok: Business & Economics

Thailand’s Board of Investment recorded roughly $60.23 billion in investment applications across 3,370 projects in 2025, a 67% jump in value year over year. That scale is what separates a Bangkok business placement from a cheap semester abroad.

Authentica placement: Healthcare Internship in Thailand, plus custom business and operations placements.

  7. Ireland - Dublin: Tech, Psychology & Social Sciences

Sixteen of the top twenty global tech companies hold a strategic Irish presence, most based in Dublin, with 106,000+ working in the ICT sector. Less obvious but well documented: USC’s Applied Psychology masters send students here for summer placements, a real psychology pipeline, not a hypothetical one.

  8. Vietnam - Ho Chi Minh City: Manufacturing & Supply Chain

Roughly $8.37 billion registered FDI in 2025, up 24.2% year over year, with manufacturing and processing taking the largest share. For supply-chain and operations students, that is a production economy in motion rather than a case study.

  9. Italy - Florence: Arts, Design & Humanities

A center of Italian leather craft since the 13th century that industrialized around its own heritage: Florence and nearby Scandicci now pair traditional craftsmanship with serious luxury manufacturing investment. Craft, prototyping, branding, and supply chain operate in one place.

Authentica placement: internships within the Florence Standard Program.

  10. France - Paris: Arts, Fashion & International Affairs

France’s fashion and luxury sector contributes 3.1% of national GDP and supports 600,000+ jobs, a larger GDP share than its automotive industry (Paris Region). Home to LVMH and Paris Fashion Week.

Matching Discipline to Destination

No single city serves every major, which is the whole reason this list spans ten.

  • Business, finance, and economics:New York, London, Bangkok, Berlin.
  • Engineering and technology:Bangalore, Seoul, Dublin.
  • Psychology and social sciences:Dublin first, with international-organization cities as the broader pattern, genuinely fewer options than business or engineering, and worth saying so.
  • Arts, design, and media:Florence and Paris, with London for media specifically.
  • Manufacturing and supply chain:Ho Chi Minh City.

A student’s host organization still matters more than the city’s headline statistics.

A Note on How This List Was Built

The top three are ordered by one external, published measure: the Global Financial Centers Index 38 (September 2025). Past that, we have deliberately not invented a composite score, ranking a fashion capital against a manufacturing hub on a single scale would be false precision, and the kind of claim a well-informed reader should reject. Positions 4 through 10 reflect breadth of opportunity across disciplines, and every entry earned its place through a named, dated, checkable source: an official investment report, a recognized index, a government economic release, or a documented university pipeline.

Where we run programs, we say so and link to them. Where the strongest opportunity for a given discipline sits somewhere else, we say that too. A map drawn only around one provider’s own footprint would be marketing dressed as research and considerably less useful to the person weighing options.

For Institutions Building a Portfolio

Our placement network reaches well beyond the cities named above - Singapore, Malaysia, and Cape Town run alongside them, and custom placements can be built in 25+ countries around a department’s objectives, discipline, and destination. That range means a study abroad office can answer most students who walk through the door with one partner, and scope something new when a discipline needs a market we have not built in yet. The full board of live placements is at authentica.com/programs/internships-abroad, and a custom program starts with a proposal request.

The Authentica AI Proposal Tool

Picking a destination is the easy half. Turning it into a program a committee will approve is the slow half. Our AI proposal tool compresses it: enter learning objectives, discipline, destination, dates, and group size, and it returns a reviewable program draft - itinerary, budget estimate, risk assessment, and SDG and competency alignment, with our program designers reviewing every draft before anything is committed. Test a city on this list against your own objectives before it ever reaches an agenda.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends entirely on discipline. Finance and business point to New York, London, or Bangkok; technology and engineering point to Bangalore, Seoul, Dublin, or Berlin; manufacturing and supply chain point to Ho Chi Minh City; arts, design, and fashion point to Florence or Paris. No single country tops every category, and any list claiming otherwise is oversimplifying.

Start with the industry, not the city’s reputation, then ask what the host organization would actually have you do. A well-known city with a vague placement is worth less than a strong, scoped project somewhere less obvious. The destination gets you in the room; the project and the mentor determine what you carry out of it.

Bangalore is the strongest match profiled here, ranked 14th globally in Startup Genome’s 2025 Global Startup Ecosystem Report, though Seoul and Dublin’s tech corridors are also strong, discipline-adjacent options.

Dublin has the clearest documented pipeline, evidenced by real university programs (such as USC’s Applied Psychology internships) that place students there specifically. Options for this discipline are genuinely fewer than for business or engineering, which is worth being upfront about.

Yes, most structured placements run from two weeks up to twelve, which comfortably fits a single summer term. Apply four to six months ahead, since summer cohorts fill on rolling timelines.

The map is only useful once you pick a point on it

Students: find the industry first, then the placement. Institutions: a multi-destination portfolio answers more students without adding a staff line and the design work starts with a conversation, not an RFP cycle.
