Start-Up Trek in Singapore

Sustainable Development Goals in Action

Program Overview

Singapore is an entrepreneurial hub that is considered to have one of the world’s leading startup ecosystems. Recently ranked eighth in the world by Startup Genome’s latest global start-up ecosystem ranking, Singapore now stands third in Asia in terms of this entrepreneurship ranking. Home to around 4,000 tech start-ups and 200 incubators, Singapore also ranks among the top 10 countries in the Global Innovation Index. As early as the 1980s, the Singapore government promoted entrepreneurship as a strategy for economic growth, recognizing its lack of natural land resources. While challenges such as the supply of human capital and expensive local talent do pose some obstacles, Singapore continues to be an innovation and entrepreneurship leader.

This program will provide students with an opportunity to experience Singapore’s entrepreneurial scene through interactions with local business leaders, founders, and innovators. Students will also work closely with start-ups on projects that will provide them hands-on experience. In addition, students will also be involved in immersive cultural activities that highlight Singapore’s melting pot of different cultures.

Active Learning Models

The impact of experiential learning programs like this is enhanced by the use of active learning strategies to engage and assess student performance. Here are some suitable strategies that, in addition to addressing the intellectual portion of learning, evoke physical, emotional, and social engagement with themselves and with the city/country:

  • Scavenger Hunt: A fun way to help students get outside their comfort zone and “discover” the city/country using gamified elements that evoke a sense of adventure and competition.

  • Immersive Experiences: Learning skills/participating in activities that are part of local culture (e.g., cooking class) add fun, engagement, and learning to the student experience.
