Program Overview

This hands-on experiential internship is designed for engineering students and pairs them with enterprises solving critical challenges in sustainability and inclusivity. The program is based in Singapore — often called “Instant Asia” for its remarkable melting pot of cultures, a legacy in part of its history as one of the biggest and busiest ports in Asia. Few cities offer engineers a more dynamic, innovation-rich environment in which to apply their skills to real-world problems.

Over the course of the program, students work closely with host organizations on team-based projects aligned to their background and interest areas, taking ownership of project objectives from scoping to delivery. Alongside the intellectual growth the projects provide, students experience local life and culture through guided immersions that set the stage for their own independent exploration of the city and country during the internship.

The experience is supported across both online and in-country phases. A Design Thinking Workshop helps teams frame and scope their work, weekly in-person mentorship check-ins keep projects on track, and a final presentation gives students the chance to share their results with host organizations and faculty.

Key Program Elements

Real-World Engineering Internships for Impact

  • Take on team-based internship projects with enterprises tackling sustainability and inclusivity challenges.
  • Engage across diverse fields — humanitarian engineering, agri-tech and urban farming, food-waste biotech and the circular economy, and aerospace and defense technology.
  • Frame and scope projects through a structured Design Thinking Workshop at the start of the program.
  • Receive weekly in-person mentorship check-ins with the Authentica team and host organizations to ensure steady progress.

Build Professional & Life Skills

  • Develop project-management, problem-solving, and presentation skills through live, real-world projects.
  • Strengthen interpersonal, team-management, and client-relationship skills via collaborative work.
  • Grow in adaptability, tolerance for ambiguity, and self-knowledge — life skills that extend well beyond the classroom.

Experience Singapore’s Culture & Heritage

  • Take a guided cultural tour of the Civic District, the Raffles landing site, and Chinatown with a stop at the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple.
  • Enjoy a Singapore River cruise and a visit to Merlion Park.
  • Explore Peranakan heritage and Little India on guided walking tours.
  • Visit Marina Barrage, the Singapore City Gallery, and Gardens by the Bay.

FAQs About the Program

Contact Authentica or your university’s study abroad office to discuss whether a future cohort is being planned. We co-design each program with faculty and match students to internship placements based on their background and interest areas.

It is designed for engineering students — across disciplines such as bioengineering, environmental, mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering, computer science, and sustainability — who want hands-on experience solving real-world challenges in sustainability and inclusivity.

Placements are team-based and matched to students’ backgrounds and interests across host organizations in sectors such as humanitarian engineering, agri-tech, biotech, and advanced manufacturing. The final list of organizations and projects may vary at the time of program confirmation.

Participants stay in a centrally located serviced residence in the Central Business District on a twin-share, room-only basis, with Wi-Fi, shared kitchen and laundry, and weekly room cleaning, within a short walk of an MRT station.

A dedicated Authentica Program Manager provides 24×7 on-ground support, the program opens with an orientation and safety briefing, and teams have weekly in-person check-ins. Authentica holds a General Liability Insurance Policy (US$5M worldwide coverage) and an Errors & Omissions policy (US$1M+). Singapore is consistently ranked among the world’s safest cities.
