Sustainable Development Goals in Action
Program Overview
Sport has long been an integral part of the culture of the UK and France. It became particularly important in the imperial era, as sport was used to instill and develop values and character—a fundamental part of education, the monarchies wanted to provide for their citizens abroad. Values such as self-control, good health, fitness, and teamwork, putting the team before oneself, cooperation, and solidarity were all seen as characteristics necessary for its leaders—and soldiers! It is therefore no surprise that the French founded the modern Olympic Games, and some of the most successful performances in the games are from nations that have historically had large empires.
To understand health and human performance in contemporary UK and France, it is therefore helpful to recognize the significance of sport to the fabric of the two nations. Today, we will see this reflected in a well-developed ecosystem that includes athletes, coaches, sporting clubs, training facilities, physical and mental health facilities, fitness and rehabilitation centers, stadiums, hospitality products and services, fans and fan clubs, merchandising, etc. The proposed program itinerary will add to student learning by engaging them with people and organizations in this sophisticated ecosystem while also immersing them in enriching cultural experiences.
