Engineering Internship in Singapore
- Singapore
Sustainable Development Goals in Action
Program Overview
This hands-on experiential internship is designed for engineering students and pairs them with enterprises solving critical challenges in sustainability and inclusivity. The program is based in Singapore — often called “Instant Asia” for its remarkable melting pot of cultures, a legacy in part of its history as one of the biggest and busiest ports in Asia. Few cities offer engineers a more dynamic, innovation-rich environment in which to apply their skills to real-world problems.
Over the course of the program, students work closely with host organizations on team-based projects aligned to their background and interest areas, taking ownership of project objectives from scoping to delivery. Alongside the intellectual growth the projects provide, students experience local life and culture through guided immersions that set the stage for their own independent exploration of the city and country during the internship.
The experience is supported across both online and in-country phases. A Design Thinking Workshop helps teams frame and scope their work, weekly in-person mentorship check-ins keep projects on track, and a final presentation gives students the chance to share their results with host organizations and faculty.

UN Sustainable Development Goals in Action for this Program
SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
- Students apply engineering skills on live projects with technology-driven enterprises across agri-tech, biotech, and advanced manufacturing.
- The program immerses participants in one of the world’s most innovative urban economies.
SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities
- Internship projects engage with organizations advancing inclusion for persons with disabilities and low-income communities.
- Students see first-hand how engineering and technology can be designed to serve underserved populations.
SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
- Through host organizations and exposure visits, students study how a dense city-state pursues sustainable urban living — from water management to urban greenery.
- Cultural immersions reveal how Singapore balances heritage, density, and livability.
SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
- Projects with circular-economy enterprises — including food-waste upcycling and sustainable food production — model responsible production.
- Students engage directly with solutions that reduce waste and recover resources.
