Italyโ€™s extraordinary cultural heritageโ€”from ancient Roman ruins and Renaissance masterpieces to UNESCO World Heritage citiesโ€”is increasingly at risk due to environmental pressures and changing human behavior. Climate change, overtourism, seismic activity, urban development, and rural depopulation are testing the resilience of centuries-old structures and cultural landscapes.

This course investigates how Italy is navigating the sustainability of cultural heritage through interdisciplinary and community-focused strategies. Students will engage with case studies from Florence, Rome, Venice, and rural Italy to explore how environmental challenges are being addressed through technological innovation, participatory governance, and sustainable tourism. The course critically examines how Italian institutions and communities strive to protect tangible and intangible heritage while adapting to a changing world.

UN Sustainable Development Goals Wheel
Protecting heritage in a changing climate

This course sits at the intersection of culture and climate. It most directly engages SDG 11.4 (Sustainable Cities & Communities) โ€” protecting and safeguarding cultural and natural heritage โ€” alongside SDG 13 (Climate Action) as climate change threatens historic sites, SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption) in conservation materials, SDG 4 (Quality Education) through heritage literacy, and SDG 17 (Partnerships) via UNESCO and international heritage frameworks.

5 Key SDGs Addressed
SDG 4: Quality Education SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production SDG 13: Climate Action SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals
Climate change impacts on cultural heritage Sustainable tourism and its effects on heritage sites The role of technology in preserving cultural sites UNESCO World Heritage sites and sustainable management Community-driven preservation efforts in villages
