Spain's diverse and historically significant cultural heritageโ€”from ancient Roman ruins to medieval cathedrals and UNESCO World Heritage citiesโ€”is increasingly threatened by environmental and human pressures. Climate change, overtourism, urban expansion, and shifting demographics challenge efforts to preserve these valuable assets for future generations.

This course explores how Spain is addressing the sustainability of cultural heritage and historic preservation through multidisciplinary frameworks. Students will engage with case studies that highlight the environmental impacts on heritage sites, technological innovations in conservation, and the role of local communities and tourism management. With a focus on balancing tradition with ecological and social responsibility, students will analyze how sustainability principles are being integrated into heritage policy, planning, and practice in Spain.

UN Sustainable Development Goals Wheel
Aligned with 5 key UN Sustainable Development Goals

The course most directly engages SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) through cultural heritage protection in urban contexts, SDG 13 (Climate Action) through adaptive conservation responses to climate risks, SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) through sustainable tourism, SDG 4 (Quality Education) through heritage literacy and stewardship, and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) through community-centered and inclusive preservation approaches.
